Suicide Intervention Training

Familiarity with suicide and academic preparation assists Judy in creating practical, interactive, and culturally competent trainings that increase participants' suicide intervention knowledge and confidence to assist the individual struggling with suicide.

Suicide intervention training prepares individuals to recognize and respond to others who are struggling with suicide. Advanced training is available for those skilled in providing suicide interventions and who want to enhance their proficiency.

Suicide Intervention Training (SIT) is individually designed for each organization to meet the needs of their participants and typically include the following:

  • Why suicide?
  • Self-harming behaviour & suicide
  • Warning signs and precipitating events
  • The importance of listening
  • Asking about suicide in such a way as to receive an honest response
  • Risk assessment & estimating risk
  • Accessing supportive services
  • Safety planning
  • Caring for the caregiver

Advanced Suicide Intervention Training (ASIT) is designed for those familiar with providing suicide interventions and is specifically created for the organizing agency. Types of issues addressed include:

  • Current suicide research appropriate to the hosting agency
  • The difference between attention seeking, controlling behaviour and suicide
  • The role of suicide attempts
  • Responding to the repetitively suicidal individual
  • Protective and risk factors

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a standardized internationally recognized model for providing immediate suicide intervention. This training encourages participants to be familiar with their values and beliefs regarding suicide, and provides a three step model that moves through connecting, understanding and assisting the person who is at risk of suicide.
